x/bu-ol
— Aug 26, 2026
Buñol’s La Tomatina festival draws more than 20,000 participants to hurl up to 165 tons of tomatoes in a one-hour melee, with many international revelers among the crowd and non-locals paying a 15-euro entry. The event, rooted in a 1945 spontaneous fight, was banned under Franco in the 1950s, later revived and propelled by 1980s media attention, and today attracts visitors from around the world, including a growing Indian contingent inspired by the Bollywood film Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara, with safety rules like squashing tomatoes and wearing goggles and earplugs shaping the experience.
