An observational analysis of more than 200,000 matched statin users and nonusers found statin use was associated with a 15% lower risk of developing open-angle glaucoma over five years. Among people with glaucoma, statin use was also associated with lower rates of surgery, laser treatment and pressure-lowering eye drops. Researchers said the findings do not prove statins prevent glaucoma or slow its progression, and further research is needed to establish whether the association is causal.
