Alabama Power is positioning crews and preparing to respond to possible outages as a developing Gulf system threatens Alabama with strong winds and heavy rain this weekend. Crews will begin restoration work only when conditions are safe, while Jefferson County emergency officials warn that prolonged gusts and saturated ground could bring down trees and cause flooding. Residents are urged to monitor local weather and emergency alerts, shelter in a sturdy building away from windows and electrical hazards, and keep clear of downed power lines. Customers can report outages and check restoration progress through Alabama Power’s app, website, phone line or text alerts; officials also recommend preparing basic supplies such as charged phones, flashlights, water and nonperishable food.

Hurricane Isaias Targets Florida Panhandle, Alabama

The National Hurricane Center is monitoring a broad low-pressure area that may form over the southwestern Gulf of Mexico, with development expected to be slow and a 30% chance of becoming a tropical depression or storm within seven days. It is too early to assess possible Gulf Coast impacts; if a storm forms, it would be named Isaias, in a season that has yet to produce an Atlantic hurricane.
