Alzheimer’s Walks Raise Funds Across Communities
Communities in the United States and Scotland are holding Alzheimer’s and dementia walks to honor people affected by the disease and raise money for research, care and support. In Orlando, about 2,000 people gathered at Lake Eola, where the Walk to End Alzheimer’s featured the association’s Promise Garden flower ceremony; participants also described the personal toll of dementia and the value of early diagnosis. On Long Island’s North Fork, the annual walk at Peconic Landing has raised $123,527 toward a $140,000 goal this year and $365,507 since 2023, while helping bring services to the area. A Grand Island walk is scheduled for Oct. 11 at Amur Plaza, as one of more than 500 events nationwide, and memory walks across Scotland—including in Eglinton and six other cities—also raised funds for people living with dementia. At these events, colored flowers represent participants’ connections to the disease, including living with it, grieving a loved one, caregiving or supporting the cause.
