Angela Paxton urges GOP ticket hold in tight Texas race

Angela Paxton sat for a direct-to-camera television spot that aired on ESPN during the Houston Cougars game against UCF, telling viewers she is voting for the Republican ticket on November 3 without ever saying her husbands name.

A New York Times/Siena poll released the same Saturday showed Democrat James Talarico leading Ken Paxton by six points.

In the ad, paid for by Texas PAC and not authorized by any candidate, the state senator opens with the line she has used before. Lets talk about the elephant in the room: In a general election, its not as much about the individual players on the team. Its about getting the whole team across the finish line. She continues, Either we hold every Republican seat, or we hand the future of Texas to the other team. Thats why Im voting for the Republican ticket on Nov. 3. Lets hold the line together. The on-screen text reads Vote Republican November 3rd. She identifies herself at the top: Im Texas Senator Angela Paxton. People have asked my thoughts about this election and turns out, I have some … Im voting for the Republican ticket on November 3rd.

Texas PAC is a super PAC affiliated with Senate GOP leadership and the Senate Leadership Fund tied to Senate Majority Leader John Thune. The group has spent more than $126 million on advertising boosting Ken Paxtons Senate campaign; Axios has separately cited the figure at $131 million. The same organization backed Sen. John Cornyn in the Republican primary that Ken Paxton won. The Cook Political Report rates the general-election contest a toss-up.

Angela Paxton filed for divorce in July 2025 after 38 years of marriage, citing adultery on what she called biblical grounds. The couple had lived apart since June 2024, according to the Texas Tribune. They have four children and seven grandchildren. In her July statement she said, I believe marriage is a sacred covenant and I have earnestly pursued reconciliation. But in light of recent discoveries, I do not believe that it honors God or is loving to myself, my children, or Ken to remain in the marriage. She added, I move forward with complete confidence that God is always working everything together for the good of those who love Him and who are called according to His purpose. Ken Paxtons legal team formally denied the allegations.

The personal filing does not erase the institutional stakes she is now describing. Two weeks before the ad, on September 18, she delivered a speech titled The Elephant in the Room to more than 100 board members of the Texas Federation of Republican Women in Round Rock. There she made the same case in sharper institutional language. Its not the people — its the seat. Because we have more control over that seat and the future when we control the seat — when its still in the family, even if were mad at them. But if we lose it to the other team, the nuances that we want to fix with maybe a certain candidate are nothing compared to what its going to take to get it back, right? Attendees noted she did not name Ken Paxton in that room either.

Texas has not elected a Democratic U.S. senator since 1988. Republicans have not lost a statewide race in the state in more than three decades. President Trump carried Texas by nearly 14 points in 2024. Those numbers form the baseline against which the current poll must be read. Angela Paxtons argument is that personal grievance, however serious, does not outweigh the loss of that leverage. Once the seat leaves Republican hands, she told the Round Rock audience, the cost of reclaiming it dwarfs any internal correction the party might prefer.

Veronica Escobar offered the opposing frame in a post the day the ad appeared: She wouldnt tolerate Ken Paxtons immoral and corrupt conduct. But she expects Texans to. Vote @jamestalarico. Some online critics focused on the omitted name, calling the spot desperate or an elevation of party over the biblical grounds she herself cited. The record does not show a detailed public rebuttal from Angela Paxton to those specific attacks. What the record does show is her consistent distinction, first in the closed Republican womens meeting and then on statewide television, between the private covenant she is dissolving and the public office whose partisan control she wants preserved. She treats the Senate seat as an instrument of majority power rather than an extension of any one mans character.

Ken Paxton was impeached by the Texas House in 2023 on corruption allegations and acquitted by the Texas Senate. He continued serving as attorney general. The adultery allegation had surfaced in that earlier proceeding through testimony from a former chief of staff; Angela Paxton sat through the trial but was not permitted to vote. He defeated the incumbent senator in the primary and now faces the first genuinely competitive statewide general election Texas Republicans have seen in a generation.

Family members have entered the air war separately. Ken Paxtons daughter Mattie Hayworth appears in her own advertisement attacking Talarico on affordability, saying, When they come after you, my dad goes after them. The spot features her partner and children. Vice President JD Vance, speaking to Fox News while breaking ground in Brownsville on a jobs project expected to produce thousands of positions, tied Talaricos religious and social views to economic stakes: a candidate who supported men in womens sports, who says that God is non-binary, who says there are six genders, Vance argued, will not defend either jobs or values.

Leaked audio captured Ken Paxton assessing the political temperature after a Republican midterm convention. To be honest with you, the numbers — when we did that convention — it dropped our numbers. Everybodys numbers dropped. Right now, yeah, not good. Republican strategist Karl Rove has said Paxton must agree to debate Talarico or lose the race. The record does not contain Paxtons formal response to that demand.

The November 3 ballot will decide whether the seat remains in Republican hands or becomes the first Democratic Senate win in Texas in nearly four decades. Cook already calls it a toss-up. The Texas PAC investment, the daughters affordability spot, the vice presidents Brownsville appearance, and Angela Paxtons own refusal to elevate private rupture over partisan control of the chamber all point to the same calendar date. Voters will choose whether the whole team she described crosses the finish line or whether the future of the Texas seat shifts to the other side.
