Arkansas Medicaid Ad Draws Backlash Over White Casting
Arkansas Gov. Sarah Huckabee Sanders is promoting stricter Medicaid eligibility rules with a campaign ad featuring “Brad,” a fictional young white man who plays video games instead of working. The policy will require many adults ages 19 to 64 to complete 80 hours a month of work, education, job training or community service to keep coverage, with exemptions for certain groups, starting in 2027. Conservative commentators Matt Walsh and Sean Davis criticized the ad for depicting the recipient as white rather than Black, invoking racial stereotypes about welfare abuse—even though the ad concerns Medicaid, not welfare, and most Arkansas Medicaid recipients are white. Scholar Ange-Marie Hancock said the controversy reflects the enduring influence of the “welfare queen” trope and its racialized history; Sanders’ campaign defended the ad as a call to avoid supporting people who choose not to work.
