Work Zone Crashes Kill Two Road Workers, Injure Others

Three separate work-zone crashes resulted in road-worker deaths or injuries. In Pennsylvania, a construction sweeper operator was killed after the sweeper moved from a closed lane into traffic on Interstate 70 and was struck by a minivan; the investigation is ongoing. In Michigan, a sanitation truck struck a stopped pickup near a road closure, pushing vehicles into road commission trucks and fatally hitting a worker directing traffic; two people in the pickup were hospitalized, and investigators said alcohol and drugs did not appear to be factors. In Maryland, a car rear-ended another vehicle slowing for a lane closure on Interstate 97, sending the striking car into a work zone and injuring a highway worker; impairment may have contributed, and charges are pending the investigation.
