Automakers Extend Warranties to 15 Years in Spain
Automakers use long warranties to reassure buyers facing repair costs and unfamiliar technology, particularly as EVs add expensive battery and drivetrain components; VinFast, for example, advertises battery coverage of 10 years or 200,000 kilometers in India. In the United States, Hyundai, Kia, Genesis and Mitsubishi offer powertrain coverage of up to 10 years or 100,000 miles, while battery warranties on electric and hybrid vehicles should be checked separately; extended plans can cost hundreds to thousands of dollars annually. In Spain, some brands extend protection for as long as 15 years, but programs from Toyota, Lexus and others generally require owners to service their cars at official dealerships, helping manufacturers retain after-sales business. Chinese brands are also competing with lengthy factory warranties, including coverage that can apply without the same service-network conditions. Third-party provider Endurance offers some unlimited-mileage plans and roadside and travel benefits, but its plans may cost more than competitors, and customers have reported claim issues amid class-action lawsuits over its practices. The stakes can be high after factory coverage expires, especially for vehicles with costly components and repairs, so buyers should weigh warranty terms, exclusions, service requirements and likely long-term maintenance expenses.
