Canucks Claim Goalie Meriläinen Off Waivers
The Vancouver Canucks claimed 24-year-old Finnish goaltender Leevi Meriläinen off waivers from Ottawa, and he says he is eager to earn a consistent role in the team’s goaltending tandem. He made his Vancouver debut in relief against Edmonton, stopping 10 of 11 shots in a 9-7 loss, and was expected to make his first start for the Canucks against Calgary. Meriläinen had a strong 2024-25 season, but struggled in 2025-26, posting an .860 save percentage and 3.51 goals-against average in 20 appearances. He has welcomed the support of Vancouver fans and the familiarity of fellow Finn Aatu Räty and Finnish goaltending coach Marko Torenius.
