Charleston names Webb next police chief

Charleston Mayor Amy Shuler Goodwin named Deputy Chief Jason Webb the city’s next police chief. Webb, a longtime department veteran with experience in patrol, investigations, SWAT and drug enforcement, will be sworn in Oct. 22, when current Chief Scott Dempsey retires after 26 years with the department. Goodwin praised Webb’s leadership and commitment, while crediting Dempsey with strengthening recruitment, overseeing low crime numbers and guiding the department’s move toward a new Public Safety Center.
