China Open Champion Zheng Withdraws From Wuhan Open
Zheng Qinwen withdrew from the Wuhan Open on Monday, citing fatigue and a right shoulder injury, a day after defeating Mirra Andreeva 7-5, 6-4 to become the first Chinese player to win the China Open. The win was her first WTA 1000 title and first since Tokyo 2024. Andreeva also withdrew, citing a schedule change ahead of the WTA Finals in Indian Wells next month. In a statement, Zheng said Wuhan is where her tennis dream began and that since returning from injury she had played a demanding stretch at the US Open, Billie Jean King Cup, and China Open, leaving her body very fatigued. She said she looked forward to returning next year in her best form. At the trophy presentation she said she had been through a very tough year and sang a pop song to the crowd. Zheng missed nearly eight months after elbow surgery last year and dropped to No. 160. She reached the US Open quarter-finals before Beijing, has won 13 of her last 14 tour-level matches, and is projected to rise to around No. 23. Lucky losers Anna Bondar and Camila Osorio replaced them in the Wuhan draw; Iva Jovic advances directly to the second round.
