Cities expand school-zone speed cameras
Westlake approved school-zone speed cameras along Seminole Pratt Whitney Road near Seminole Ridge High School, where drivers going more than 10 mph over the limit will face $100 citations after a planned 30-day warning period. City officials say a speed study found additional enforcement was needed to protect students, while one resident argued that cameras could worsen congestion and that roadway improvements would be a better solution. Orlando has also installed 20 school-zone cameras; they issue $100 citations for drivers at least 10 mph over the limit when school is in session, following a 45-day warning period. Orlando citations are reviewed by a police traffic-enforcement officer, and unpaid tickets can increase to $206.
