Communities Host Revolutionary War History Events
New scholarship is using artifacts, battlefields and landscapes to reveal dimensions of the American Revolution that written records may miss, as explored in a book co-edited by Brookdale professor Matthew A. Kalos. Commemorative programs are also bringing local Revolutionary history to the public: a Johnson County event will highlight veterans buried there, while an exhibit in Rapid City spotlights African American and Native American patriots, influential women and international supporters often omitted from traditional accounts. In North Carolina, students learned about the Overmountain Men’s 1780 march to the Battle of Kings Mountain through historical storytelling and hands-on activities. Together, the efforts reflect varied approaches to preserving and broadening public understanding of the Revolution as the country approaches its 250th anniversary.
