Candidates from both parties urge ending Senate filibuster
As control of the Senate is projected to be a tossup, candidates and lawmakers are debating whether to eliminate or change the filibuster, which generally requires 60 votes to advance legislation. Democratic Senate candidate Juliana Stratton supports eliminating it, saying that would let Congress act on abortion rights, voting protections and an assault-weapons ban; the articles do not specify fellow candidate Jamie Davis’s position. Republican Sen. Bernie Moreno has also urged ending the filibuster if senators cannot conduct meaningful debate, arguing the 60-vote threshold is blocking the SAVE America Act, which would require voter ID and proof of citizenship for voter registration. President Donald Trump has likewise called on Republicans to end the filibuster to pass that bill, though the articles note Republicans do not have the votes to do so.
