Doha plans millennium-spanning Chinese ceramics exhibition
The National Museum of Qatar will open “Boats Floating Afar” on October 26, 2026, featuring more than 120 objects from China and Qatar that trace Chinese ceramics from the Tang through Qing dynasties and the maritime routes that carried them abroad. The exhibition highlights changing techniques and styles—from celadon and early glazed wares to Ming blue-and-white porcelain and Qing pieces—and explores how overseas demand shaped production. The show continues cultural exchanges between Qatar and China, a partnership marked by their 2016 Year of Culture. More broadly, Chinese ceramics offer durable archaeological evidence of centuries of global trade: discoveries from Egypt and elsewhere document their circulation through Southeast Asia, India, the Persian Gulf and West Asia into North Africa and beyond.
