Ex-Dallas Officer Guyger Set for Parole Release
Amber Guyger, the former Dallas police officer convicted of murdering her neighbor Botham Jean in 2018, is scheduled to be released on parole Oct. 16 after serving about seven years of her 10-year sentence. The Texas Board of Pardons and Paroles approved her release after denying parole in 2024, citing her institutional conduct, lack of a documented pattern of violent offenses, and completion of rehabilitation and employment-readiness programs. At trial, Guyger testified that she mistook Jean’s apartment for her own and believed he was an intruder. Jean’s killing drew widespread attention and prompted Texas lawmakers to pass a law requiring officers to keep body cameras on throughout their participation in investigations. Jean’s family has asked for privacy as it processes the parole decision.
