Experts Share Ways to Preserve Muscle With Age
Age-related muscle loss is linked to less activity, changing hormones and, for some people losing weight rapidly on GLP-1 medications, loss of lean muscle. Fitness coach Jacob Zemer recommends getting enough protein, strength training, quality sleep and staying active; U.S. guidelines advise adults to work all major muscle groups at least two days a week. Separately, University of Copenhagen researchers reported that aging and disease reduce cardiolipin, a molecule needed for healthy mitochondria, and found that restoring some of it reversed early muscle wasting in mice. The findings suggest a potential biological target for future treatments, but do not establish a therapy for people.
