F-150s, Family Fortunes And Kansas Residency: Iowa Governor Debate Becomes A Battle Over Authenticity
By Daily Caller News Foundation (/journals/dcnf)
The Iowa gubernatorial debate turned into a battle Tuesday over Republican candidate Zach Lahn’s residency and Democratic state auditor Rob Sand’s family background.
The two candidates exchanged blows over their past residencies and Sand’s alleged family wealth, with Lahn repeatedly accusing Sand of being a “liberal billionaire” through his wife’s family’s company, Lauridsen Group, Inc. Sand repeatedly referred to Lahn’s reported ties to Kansas, which include public records of him voting there in 2018, 2020 and 2022 before he registered in Iowa in 2024.
“This is a central lie of Rob Sand’s campaign,” Lahn said during the debate. “You’ll understand that he’s been spreading this lie using money that his family has given him to do that all over the airwaves. People see this all the time. But here’s the deal, I am now encountering somebody who is not going to be intimidated by how much money your family has. It just won’t happen. I can’t be intimidated like that.”
“The truth is I’m a sixth generation Iowan. I live in Iowa today. I have lived in Iowa. Rob has been lying about this, and the issue is I have a blended family, and my kids split time,” Lahn continued.
The subject of Lahn’s residency occurred during a conversation about education, with Lahn claiming he was the “biggest advocate for public school kids.” Sand accused Lahn of not spending enough time in Iowa, suggesting he still spends much of his time out-of-state.
“I don’t think you’re going to be the biggest advocate for public school students over a guy who sends his kids there. When you were running advertisements saying that Marxists have hijacked the curriculum in Iowa, Zach, I’m pretty sure that that’s just more evidence that you don’t spend enough time in Iowa.”
Sand said during the debate that Lahn was not a “full-time Iowan.”
“This is not about why you’re in Kansas. This is about the fact that you’re not in Iowa. There are 3.1 million people who live here and they need to have a full-time Iowan,” Sand said.
“That’s just not true,” Lahn said. “You have no evidence of that.”
Lahn claimed he travels often, though he did not appear to answer the question on how to assure voters he would be present in Iowa full time.
Lahn repeatedly attacked Sand for being dishonest about his family’s wealth. Sand’s wife, Christine, is the CEO of Lauridsen Group, which owns several food and health companies, according to NBC News. Her family donated over $12 million to Sand’s campaigns over the years, including when he ran for state auditor.
Despite the alleged wealth, Sand frequently features his 2023 Ford F-150 pickup truck on social media to portray himself as a relatable, small-town Iowan. His campaign announced in 2025 that he bought the truck from a small-town dealership, framing the purchase as a fiscally responsible decision that supported small businesses.
Sand has a personal salary of $103,000 per year, according to KCRG, an ABC News affiliate.
Lahn, a businessman and farmer received strong backing from the Make America Healthy Again (MAHA) movement. He narrowly defeated Republican Iowa Rep. Randy Feenstra in June, despite his opponent receiving an endorsement from President Donald Trump.
Turning Point Action endorsed Lahn ahead of the primary.
Iowa is notably the No. 1 producer of corn and No. 2 producer of soy among U.S. states. These crops are used to make products that are heavily scrutinized by the MAHA movement such as high fructose corn syrup and seed oils.
The Iowa Cancer Registry’s 2026 Cancer in Iowa report estimated that 21,700 “new, invasive cancers will be diagnosed” in the state that year. It also projected that 6,400 Iowans — 2 out of every 1,000 of the state’s residents — will die from the disease in 2026 alone. Lahn told the Daily Caller News Foundation that Health and Human Services (HHS) Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. was fighting a “very corrupt bureaucracy.”
“He’s really working hard in the face of a very corrupt bureaucracy. Anybody that comes into that department, you can either go one of two ways. You can go with them or you can go against them,” Lahn said. “And I think Bobby Kennedy is showing us an example of how you go against them … but also how hard it is to fight the machine that is within each of these agencies. Because these agencies have become recalcitrant over decades and decades.”
The Daily Mail published an article in August accusing Lahn of using his farming experience as a political prop. The outlet published the story after Lahn’s campaign disputed the information before the deadline, although the article was taken down less than 24 hours later.
Sand held an 8.2-point average lead as of Sunday, according to RealClearPolling.
Early in the night, both candidates were asked how they would address affordability, the top issue for voters ahead of the midterm elections. Lahn said he would prioritize homegrown businesses and support tax incentives for Trump’s steel mill project in Iowa. He also praised Trump’s executive action loosening restrictions on tax-exempt “red dye diesel” fuel used for farm vehicles while diesel prices remain over $6 per gallon.
Sand called for raising the minimum wage, capping utility fees and ending the privatization of Medicaid.
