Fatal Jackson Hit-and-Run Suspect Dies in Custody

Shannon Thomas, 57, died Sept. 22 of cardiac arrest while being held at the Tallahatchie County Jail, Hinds County Sheriff Tyree Jones said; no foul play is suspected. Thomas had been charged in connection with a March 4 Jackson crash in which a truck struck two people riding a bicycle, killing 21-year-old Kaitlyn Mangum-Gast and injuring a 36-year-old man. Police later said they believed the collision was intentional, and Thomas faced murder, attempted-murder and leaving-the-scene charges. He died before the case was resolved.
