Food Banks Receive Millions in Donations
Harvest Manitoba received a $5 million commitment from the family of late philanthropist Doug Harvey toward its planned $46 million food transformation centre, which is intended to expand food recovery, meal production and training opportunities. The announcement came as the food bank’s annual fundraiser raised a record $6.527 million. In Louisiana, a 40,000-pound food donation delivered through a nationwide America250 and Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints effort will support families served by the Food Bank of Central Louisiana; organizers say the initiative will send 250 truckloads to communities across the country. In South Carolina, Publix Super Market Charities gave the Lowcountry Food Bank $435,000 for refrigerated trucks, a forklift and warehouse technology upgrades to help meet rising demand across its service area. The organization says food insecurity has reached a 20-year high in the region, underscoring the need for improved capacity to distribute food year-round.
