Former Wallabies player with cystic fibrosis diagnosed with MND at 37

Former Wallabies hooker Nathan Charles, 37, has been diagnosed with motor neurone disease (MND) after about eight months of declining health and medical tests that brought no clear answers. He described the diagnosis as overwhelming and difficult, noting that MND has no cure and progressively affects the body. Charles said his first thoughts were about the impact on his family and loved ones, and he plans to use his profile to raise awareness. Diagnosed with cystic fibrosis as an infant and once not expected to live past 10, he went on to earn four caps for Australia and play professionally in Australia and England before retiring in 2018.
