Germany, Lithuania Extend; Hungary Plans Broader Ukrainian Protections
Germany and Lithuania have extended temporary protection for Ukrainians through March 2028, while Lithuania will require some newly arriving men subject to military service to show they lawfully left Ukraine or completed service, with exceptions for people already protected or with pending applications before the cutoff. Germany’s extension also excludes certain military-age Ukrainians entering from October 9, 2026; Georgia, meanwhile, is continuing housing, monthly financial and medical support for war-displaced Ukrainians through October 1, 2026. Hungary has told the European Commission it plans to extend protection to additional categories of Ukrainians, including men of conscription age, an option EU rules permit without penalty. In the United States, a Rochester resettlement agency is urging federal officials to extend and broaden Ukrainians’ Temporary Protected Status before the current designation expires October 19, while emphasizing that the deadline does not mean all Ukrainians in the area will lose lawful status or work authorization.
