Global, local groups advance disability inclusion
A Louisiana self-advocacy group is working to expand its southwest chapter and press for better accessibility, noting that transportation and other infrastructure barriers can keep people with disabilities from participating in community life. In Rhode Island, RAMP’s annual Accessibility Is Beautiful event brought together disabled community members, local makers and advocates to promote inclusion and raise awareness of barriers to accessible employment, housing and public spaces. Healthcare researchers are developing consensus-based tools to improve equity, diversity, inclusion and accessibility in studies, including more consistent reporting and attention to how discrimination can shape health outcomes. A charity governance specialist urged nonprofit boards to examine whose perspectives are missing, create space for meaningful disagreement and act promptly when inclusion problems emerge. China says a United Nations Human Rights Council resolution it proposed promotes accessibility as a human-rights issue and calls for international cooperation and technical assistance, particularly for developing countries.
