Honolulu approves Ala Moana hotel-housing towers
Honolulu’s City Council unanimously approved a conceptual plan for 1588 Ala Moana, clearing a major hurdle for a development that would replace a parking structure at Ala Moana Center with a 38-story hotel, a 17-story market-rate condominium tower and 69 affordable rental units. The proposal includes 294 hotel units and 136 for-sale homes, and requires at least 38 additional affordable units elsewhere in the city plus $5 million for street improvements and trees. UNITE HERE Local 5 members argued the affordable housing commitment would not meet workers’ needs, while supporters said the project would add housing, jobs and economic activity. The approval allows zoning exceptions but does not authorize construction; detailed plans and further permits, including a major special district permit, are still required.
