ICE Launches 45-Day Enforcement Surge Across California
President Trump confirmed a California immigration enforcement campaign expected to last at least 45 days, known as Operation Safe California, which began around San Diego and has spread to other parts of the state. Reports say more than 250 ICE officers were sent to Southern California and that officers may arrest undocumented immigrants regardless of criminal history; DHS has declined to discuss operational details, while saying it enforces federal law nationwide. Local organizations and officials report detentions and increased agent activity in San Diego and the Central Valley, including near schools, and some advocates allege racial profiling and say families are fearful. Gov. Gavin Newsom criticized the operation as an effort to intimidate communities, while Rep. David Valadao said DHS told his office enforcement was focused on people with active warrants or known criminal histories.
