Johnny Depp’s latest movie role has fans talking after the first trailer for “Ebenezer” introduced the actor as Charles Dickens’ famously miserly character. The trailer, released Thursday, drew plenty of excitement over Depp’s transformation into Ebenezer Scrooge. But the movie’s “Think you know his story? Think again” tagline left some viewers questioning what appeared to be a familiar take on the classic Christmas tale, according to Fox News. Some fans argued that the footage shown in the trailer appeared to follow the story audiences already know. “From the trailer I can confirm, its still the same story,” one X user wrote. “It’s the same as Scrooge, and Muppets Christmas Carol.” Another viewer questioned why the movie was being promoted as a different interpretation when the trailer appeared faithful to Dickens’ original story. Despite those complaints, other Depp fans said the familiar plot would not stop them from seeing the movie. One user noted that the story has been adapted many times but said they would still watch Depp’s version. Much of the positive reaction centered on Depp himself and what the role could mean for his return to major Hollywood productions. “Depp is back at the top of his game!” one fan wrote. Another said they were glad to see the actor “back in action,” while another speculated that the performance could earn Depp an Oscar. “Ebenezer” represents one of Depp’s most prominent studio projects in years. His most recent big-screen appearance was in the 2023 French historical drama “Jeanne du Barry,” and he later directed “Modi: Three Days on the Wing of Madness.” Depp is also expected to appear alongside Penélope Cruz in the upcoming thriller “Day Drinker.” The actor began his film career with “A Nightmare on Elm Street” in 1984 before gaining widespread attention as Tom Hanson on “21 Jump Street.” His career reached another level with Tim Burton’s “Edward Scissorhands” in 1990. Depp later became internationally known for playing Jack Sparrow in the “Pirates of the Caribbean” franchise, earning his first Academy Award nomination for the role. He received two additional Oscar nominations for “Finding Neverland” and “Sweeney Todd,” winning a Golden Globe for the latter. Watch the video below: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l_Ozo1xUgbU
