Libraries across US mark Banned Books Week
Libraries in San Diego, Peoria, Rutland, and the Corvallis-Benton County area are marking Banned Books Week, observed Oct. 4–10, with events and programs promoting access to challenged books and the freedom to read. San Diego Public Library is hosting events and offers a year-round digital program giving teens and young adults nationwide access to challenged e-books and audiobooks. Peoria Public Library has installed a lobby display featuring banned books, while Rutland Free Library is launching a monthly book club focused on challenged titles, beginning with “Daddy’s Roommate.” Corvallis-Benton County Public Library is inviting readers in sixth grade and older to take part in a monthlong Banned Books Bingo challenge with reading and discussion activities. Reports cite substantial censorship activity: the American Library Association recorded 4,235 challenged titles in 2025, while PEN America counted 6,870 instances of school book bans during the 2024–25 school year.
