California Weigh-Off Set for 2,857-Pound Record Bid

Giant-pumpkin growers are gathering for major weigh-offs in Half Moon Bay, California, and Canfield, Ohio. At Half Moon Bay’s 53rd annual contest, at least 30 growers will compete, including Minnesota’s Travis Gienger, whose pumpkin may challenge the 2,857-pound world record set in England; last year’s winner, Brandon Dawson, is also returning. The Half Moon Bay champion receives $9 per pound, with an additional $30,000 for breaking the record. Canfield’s 32nd weigh-off has drawn growers from several states and featured giant pumpkins and other oversized produce, with a record $50,000 in prizes, including $12,250 for first place and $13,000 for a world-record breaker. Organizers highlighted the growers’ collaborative community and educational focus on agriculture.
