Mexico enacts 2028 single-nationality rule for top offices
Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum signed a constitutional reform requiring candidates for president, state governor and Mexico City’s top executive office to hold only Mexican nationality. Dual nationals can still seek those offices if they renounce their other citizenship before registering, and the restriction will apply beginning with the 2028 electoral process; it does not affect dual citizens generally or next year’s elections. Sheinbaum’s government says the measure is intended to prevent foreign interference. Opponents argue it could undermine the rights of Mexicans who acquired another citizenship and question why the restriction applies to executive candidates when lawmakers may hold dual nationality.
