Most Americans See NIL Positively for College Sports

College sports’ shift toward professionalization has accelerated through NIL earnings and the 2025 settlement allowing schools to pay athletes directly, prompting debate over athlete compensation, transfer rules and oversight. A Senate-passed bipartisan bill would cap direct payments, limit athletes to five years of eligibility and restrict transfers, but it still needs House approval and faces uncertain prospects. Supporters of modernization argue compensation corrects decades of exploitation, while critics of the bill say it could constrain athletes without resolving questions about their status as workers and their ability to claim protections such as minimum wage. An Ipsos poll found that most Americans and college sports fans view NIL positively, while majorities also favor several proposed bill provisions, including payment caps and five-year eligibility limits. The poll also found many fans believe the NCAA prioritizes making money over protecting athletes.
