Multan Train Derailment Kills Four, Injures 30
The Rehman Baba Express (47-Up), traveling from Karachi to Peshawar, derailed near Sher Shah Bridge and Railway Station in Multan district around 5:15 a.m. Tuesday, with coaches going off the tracks. Reports put the death toll at four or five and say about 30 passengers were injured. The injured were taken to Nishtar Hospital in Multan. Rescue 1122 teams evacuated passengers and gave first aid at the scene. Rescue officials said 13 coaches had been cleared while work continued in one coach. The train's engine and TL van reportedly remained safe. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif directed officials to speed up rescue efforts and ensure medical care for the injured. An unnamed passenger claimed workers had repaired nuts and bolts on coach number nine near Rohri before the crash; that account has not been independently verified. The cause of the derailment has not been officially established.
