Ohio Prison Inmate Dies; Aggravated Murder Probe
Maurice Vinson, 29, of Akron, died Oct. 3, 2026, after a physical altercation with a cellmate at Lebanon Correctional Institution in Turtlecreek Township, Warren County, Ohio. He was taken to Atrium Medical Center for emergency care and pronounced dead there that day. Warren County Coroner Dr. Russell Uptegrove said the preliminary cause of death was blunt force injuries to the head. A full autopsy report is expected to take about eight weeks. An Ohio State Highway Patrol report described the fight and serious injuries. The patrol is handling an aggravated murder investigation that Sgt. Ryan Purpura and Warren County Prosecutor Dave Fornshell called active and open. No charges have been filed, and the other cellmate has not been identified publicly. ODRC confirmed the patrol is leading the probe and said it typically conducts its own internal investigation in such cases. Vinson's family told FOX19 NOW the system failed him and they want answers. State records show he was convicted of 11 felonies in 2023-2024, released March 12, 2025, returned on a parole violation after an ankle-monitor battery died according to the family, and was set for release Jan. 22, 2027.
