Orioles cut mascot jobs in private payroll reset

Mr. Splash used to work Section 86 after every extra-base hit. The Chief Hydration Officer, a role that debuted in May 2023, doused fans in the left-field Bird Bath and became part of the Camden Yards routine. That dedicated job is gone.

The performers behind Mr. Splash and the Oriole Bird lost their positions in a round of layoffs the club conducted across its business and entertainment departments, reported Tuesday, Oct. 7, 2026. Fans did not wait for a polished explanation. Eric Garfield wrote on social media, “The. Orioles. Are. The. Worst. Org. In. Sports.” Jules posted, “Beating the ‘O’s don’t spend money’ allegations by laying off the mascot.” Jason Woodmansee added, “The Orioles are in the ‘laying off the mascot’ stage of their downfall.”

The Athletic put the total at 16 people. Other reports described the cuts as at least in the teens or more than two dozen. The layoffs spanned ticket sales, graphic design, and food and beverage. A source speaking to The Baltimore Banner called the business-side action a “bloodbath.” An Orioles spokesperson confirmed to The Athletic that cuts impacted the team’s business department, but said the team otherwise does not comment on employee matters.

Catie Griggs, the Orioles’ president of business operations, addressed the changes in an internal memo. She wrote that the moves were “not about reducing headcount” and that the club would “continue to recruit for critical roles and will add talent in areas where we have clear needs.” The memo framed the episode as role reshaping rather than a simple headcount purge. The public record supplies no further ownership statement and no dollar figures attached to the cuts.

The team finished a 79-win season and placed fourth in the AL East. In that setting, a private sports business is free to match payroll to the work it still wants done. The decision sits inside ordinary free enterprise: management reallocates jobs, keeps some traditions, and drops the positions it no longer intends to fund as full-time roles.

What the club is keeping is specific. The Oriole Bird character will continue to appear even though the performer who held the job was laid off. The Bird Bath section in left field is slated to stay active. Without a standing Mr. Splash, the team has indicated it may turn to celebrity guest splashers to handle the water after extra-base hits. The ritual survives in outline; the dedicated payroll line does not.

Critics on social media read the mascot cuts as proof the franchise will not spend. The record does not settle that larger roster argument. It does show entertainment and business departments taking losses alongside ticket sales and graphic design, and it shows Griggs telling staff the club still plans to hire where it sees clear needs. Those two facts can stand together. A team can drop roles it considers noncritical and still recruit for others it calls essential. The spokesperson’s narrow confirmation left the rest of the personnel file closed.

Fan attachment to Mr. Splash was real enough to produce the reaction that followed the news. The character had a title, a section, and a cue tied to the game itself. Removing the person inside the bit while promising guest splashers is a cost and scheduling choice, not a ban on water in Section 86. The same pattern applies to the Bird: the costume remains part of the show; the prior staffing arrangement does not.

For ordinary ticket buyers, the visible stake is whether the in-park experience still feels like the one they paid for. The club’s answer, on the available record, is that the Bird Bath continues and the Bird still walks the park. The answer on payroll is that the dedicated Mr. Splash role has ended and at least a dozen, and by some counts more than two dozen, business-side jobs went with the reshaping. It is a private club’s call.

Griggs’s memo is the clearest internal signal the record contains. She rejected the frame of pure reduction and pointed to ongoing recruiting. Whether the next hires land in revenue, design, or somewhere else is not specified in the public accounts. The Athletic’s reporting and the Banner’s “bloodbath” description sit beside that memo without a matching list of new openings. The gap is the story’s present limit, not a license to invent one.

Baseball clubs run on gate receipts, media money, and the rest of the commercial stack. When they trim entertainment staffing after a middling standing in a tough division, they are doing what other private employers do when they decide a role no longer matches the budget they want. The conservative case does not need more architecture than that. Families who buy seats can judge the product. The market, not a regulator, grades the choice.

The performers are out. The Bird is slated to continue. Section 86 is supposed to keep the water coming, now perhaps from whoever the club books as a guest. That is the arrangement the Orioles have put on the field for the next time an extra-base hit reaches the Bird Bath.
