Permanent Daylight Time Shifts Western NHL Schedules
Alberta’s decision to remain on daylight saving time, alongside British Columbia and Manitoba, has created unusual start times for NHL teams in Western Canada because the provinces will be out of sync with regions that change their clocks. The Calgary Flames have eight games scheduled to start at 9 p.m. local time, including two at home, while Edmonton also has several 9 p.m. starts; Winnipeg’s schedule was adjusted to keep its home games no later than 7:30 p.m. Players expect to adapt with changes to sleep and preparation, but the late starts may keep some families—especially those with young children—from attending. The change is also prompting concern among some Albertans about altered time differences and the effects of darker mornings on students’ and workers’ alertness and well-being.
