US Districts Weigh School Closures and Consolidations
School districts in several U.S. communities are weighing school closures and consolidations amid falling enrollment, budget pressures and staffing concerns. Portland Public Schools has proposed closing 11 or 14 schools, along with boundary and program changes affecting as many as 42 of its 81 schools; community feedback is planned before a board decision expected in December, with changes slated for fall 2027. In Buffalo, a proposed districtwide plan would close eight schools and eliminate 108 jobs, saving nearly $24 million annually; families at PS 33 Bilingual Center say closure could disrupt students’ Spanish-language learning and cultural connections. Colorado’s Poudre School District is considering closing nine schools and consolidating two others, with a board vote set for Oct. 27 after public engagement sessions. Pinellas County is holding additional meetings ahead of an Oct. 13 school-closure vote, and Tucson parents are being invited to weigh in on possible closures.
