Prescribed Burns Planned, Completed Across Three States

A 17-acre cultural prescribed burn was carried out on Minnesota Point, marking the return of fire to the landscape after roughly 180 years. Led with Indigenous partners, the project renews Ojibwe fire stewardship and is intended to support red pine regeneration, encourage native plant growth and reduce invasive vegetation and future wildfire risk. More than 10 organizations collaborated, and organizers describe the burn as an initial step toward restoring both the area’s ecology and its cultural relationship with fire.
