President Lee to Deliver UN Keynote Before First Mexico Visit in 16 Years
South Korean President Lee Jae-myung will travel September 21 to 27 to New York for the United Nations General Assembly and then to Mexico City for the first South Korean state visit there in 16 years. National Security Adviser Wi Sung-lac said at a Sept. 21 Blue House briefing that Lee will deliver a keynote on September 22 on UN reform, global challenges, and peaceful coexistence on the Korean Peninsula, and will meet UN Secretary-General António Guterres. Wi said separate bilateral contacts in various formats are planned with leaders of key nations, including the United States and Australia. Lee arrives in Mexico City the evening of Sept. 23 for summit activities with President Claudia Sheinbaum, including an official welcoming ceremony at the National Palace, talks, MOU signing, luncheon, and joint press conference. "This visit will strengthen substantive cooperation with Mexico in the areas of trade, investment and supply chains," Wi said, adding Mexico is the largest K-Pop market in Latin America. A meeting with U.S. President Donald Trump is described as possible in various formats but not confirmed. Outlets differ on whether the Korea Investment Summit falls on Sept. 23 or 24.
