South Africa summons US ambassador for third time over criticism
South Africa has summoned U.S. Ambassador Brent Bozell for the third time in nine months, citing what it called undiplomatic conduct. The latest protest followed Bozell’s critical interviews and an opinion article accusing Pretoria of hostility and saying Washington had run out of patience. The dispute reflects broader tensions over South Africa’s land and Black economic empowerment policies, which Pretoria defends as efforts to address apartheid-era inequality, as well as U.S. President Donald Trump’s claims that white Afrikaners face persecution and South Africa’s case against Israel. Washington has imposed visa restrictions and cut aid, while South Africa has objected to what it sees as interference in its domestic affairs. Despite the strained relationship, South African officials say both governments remain committed to resolving their differences.
