South Dakota Extends Guard ICE Deployment Through 2027
South Dakota Gov. Larry Rhoden extended the deployment of seven National Guard members providing administrative support to ICE through Sept. 30, 2027, with the costs covered by federal funding. Since the deployment began in July 2025, the guardsmen have helped ICE carry out about 1,013 deportations, according to the governor’s office. The state also announced roughly $480,000 in additional federal funding for 38 Highway Patrol troopers participating in ICE’s 287(g) program; officials say the troopers have made 261 immigration-related arrests during routine patrols. South Dakota corrections officials have paroled 38 inmates directly into ICE custody, with state leaders saying the transfers reduce incarceration costs.
