South Korea, Egypt elevate ties to strategic partnership
Presidents Lee Jae Myung and Abdel Fattah el-Sisi elevated South Korea-Egypt relations to a strategic partnership at a Cheong Wa Dae summit on Oct. 8, 2026. They launched Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA) talks and signed or revised 12 cooperation documents on economic, industrial, energy, technology, culture, shipbuilding, clean energy, power infrastructure, among others. Lee said, "We are elevating our bilateral relations to a strategic partnership." At a state luncheon he cited the 1943 Cairo Declaration and the Egyptian proverb "There is bread and salt between us," hoping both grow closer as partners. Sisi held a roundtable with 23 Korean firms and proposed a Korean industrial zone in the Suez Canal Economic Zone. The leaders called K-9 howitzer joint production a successful defense model. Contested: Egypt's state information service put first-half 2026 trade at $640 million, down almost 9 percent; CAPMAS reported $874 million for the first eight months of 2026, down from $920 million. The measures differ in period. CAPMAS also showed South Korean investments in Egypt up ninefold to $736 million in first-half 2025/2026. No dispute was found on the partnership upgrade. CEPA has no stated end date.
