SSA Set to Announce 2027 COLA Oct. 14

The Social Security Administration is expected to announce the 2027 cost-of-living adjustment on Oct. 14, after the September inflation report supplies the final third-quarter data used in the calculation. The COLA is based on changes in the Consumer Price Index for Urban Wage Earners and Clerical Workers (CPI-W), and estimates currently range from about 3.4% to 3.6%; the final increase has not yet been determined. The adjustment is expected to raise benefits starting in January 2027 and would be larger than the 2.8% increase for 2026. The agency is also expected to release other annual figures affecting workers and beneficiaries, including the taxable earnings cap, the earnings-test limit for some people claiming benefits before full retirement age, and the earnings needed to qualify for Social Security credits.
