Study Puts American Dream Cost Above $5.3 Million
Investopedia estimates that the lifetime cost of a traditional American Dream has reached about $5.3 million, rising 4.1% in a year and nearly $2 million since 2023. Homeownership, cars and retirement account for nearly 70% of the total, while private-sector wages rose more slowly; a typical full-time worker with a bachelor’s degree, even counting average Social Security benefits, would fall about $1.2 million short. The burden varies sharply by location: a separate state-level analysis says a family of four would need more than $240,000 in annual income in Hawaii, California and Massachusetts to afford its defined version of the dream. Americans remain divided between optimism and concern, with 69% saying they expect to achieve the dream, even as surveys find many believe it is out of reach for most people.
