Tencent Plans $5 Billion Bond for AI Capex
Tencent is preparing an about $5 billion international bond offering that it told fixed-income investors on a Monday, Oct. 12, 2026 call would help finance AI-related capital expenditures, with the bulk directed toward chip purchases, according to people familiar with the discussions. The deal could price as early as Tuesday and may include $1.5 billion to $2 billion across dollar tranches and 20 billion to 25 billion yuan from offshore yuan notes. Proceeds are primarily for general corporate purposes including AI capex. Tencent’s AI and computing capex rose 176% year over year to 52.8 billion yuan in the June quarter, triggering a 13.8 billion yuan free-cash outflow, as it competes with ByteDance and Alibaba. Annual spending is projected at slightly more than 200 billion yuan through 2026-2027. The company said it has no current plans to issue shares or convertible bonds. SoftBank recently raised $11.1 billion in a junk-bond offering. Tencent did not respond to a request for comment. A separate formal notice said Tencent would offer notes to professional investors under its global medium-term note program without specifying the total amount or terms. No material disputes over the core figures were identified; size and timing remain subject to market conditions and investor demand.
