U.S. Deports Nicaraguan Dissident, Jailed Again
Jeffrey Jarquín, a Nicaraguan exile who says he was tortured for participating in 2018 anti-government protests, was deported from the United States and immediately returned to El Modelo prison, where he had previously been held. His family and U.S. lawyer confirmed his detention, renewing concerns about sending people back to Nicaragua amid the government’s crackdown on dissent. Jarquín had sought asylum in the United States, but his case was rejected; his lawyer says he was deported despite seeking to be sent to a third country. One report also notes that U.S. deportations to Nicaragua have risen sharply this year.
