UK Renames East Jerusalem Consulate as Mission
Britain on Thursday, Oct. 8, 2026, renamed its East Jerusalem consulate the UK Mission, Jerusalem as Israel's 30-day closure deadline expired. Staff fall from 27 to 7 diplomats; 20 including the consul general leave under a Wednesday-night understanding. Workers removed the British Consulate General plaque and consular sign; the British flag stayed flying. The order followed a September UK ban on trade in goods from Israeli West Bank settlements. The 1839 consulate in Sheikh Jarrah serves Palestinians; the Tel Aviv embassy is unaffected. Israel Foreign Minister Gideon Saar said the consulate formally ends operations and seven diplomats may remain with limited activity: "We did not want it to come to this." UK Foreign Secretary Ed Miliband said the building "will not be closing," will "deliver vital services and our work with the Palestinian people," and staff were "temporarily withdrawn" for safety; Britain "will not take reciprocal action while such discussions are underway and credible." Britain rejects Israel's legal authority to close it. The area was captured in 1967 and annexed; most countries do not recognise that annexation. Stephen Doughty said the building remains open and work continues. Jonathan Powell visited Israel last week to avert closure. Talks continue as Britain seeks to rebuild its presence.
