UN condemns racist abuse targeting Gauff
The U.N. human rights office condemned the racist online abuse directed at Coco Gauff after a disputed point in her China Open match against Sun Xinran prompted backlash. It said Black female athletes are specifically targeted by racist vitriol and called on players, coaches, sports organizations and fans to oppose racism and sexism in sport. Gauff said she received an overwhelming number of racist comments after stopping play over a flickering advertising board; the umpire ordered the point replayed, and she later said the abuse and demanding season had left her drained. She lost to Elise Mertens two days later and withdrew from the upcoming Wuhan Open to rest and recover.
