US Lifts Sanctions on Myanmar Businessman’s Daughter
The US Treasury removed Theint Win Htet from the Specially Designated Nationals list on Friday, Oct. 9, 2026. She is the daughter of Thein Win Zaw, whose Shwe Byain Phyu Group and family Treasury sanctioned in January 2024 for supplying fuel to Myanmar's military and owning at least 20 companies tied to its leadership. Her first delisting suit was dismissed in February 2025; she filed a second complaint in July 2026 arguing she has no active role in her father's business. Her complaint said US credit cards were blocked, foreign accounts restricted or closed, and she could not finish studies in the United States after a New York University bachelor's and Columbia master's enrollment. She lives in Bangkok with her mother. Contested: one account says the mother was delisted in 2025; Reuters reporting says she remains sanctioned. Lawyer Erich Ferrari voluntarily dismissed the District of Columbia suit Friday and declined to comment. Justice For Myanmar said it is deplorable that the US continues to delist Myanmar cronies and their family members that provide funding for the junta's terror. The delisting comes as Reuters reported the Trump administration opened talks with Myanmar's military-installed government this week; whether that influenced the decision is unclear. The 2021 coup set off a civil war estimated to have killed 100,000 and displaced more than 3.5 million. Washington lifted sanctions on several other Myanmar nationals and a firm in July 2025.
