Patel and Schiff Clash Over Maxwell Prison Transfer

Sen. Adam Schiff leaned into the question of who had ordered Ghislaine Maxwell moved and why the decision had come after a visit from the deputy attorney general. When FBI Director Kash Patel answered that the Bureau of Prisons had signed off on the transfer, Schiff cast the claim as one the public should reject. “You want the American people to believe that? Do you think they’re stupid?”
The dispute before the Senate Judiciary Committee on Tuesday, September 16, 2025, centered on the prison reassignment of Jeffrey Epstein’s associate and whether officials outside the Bureau of Prisons had influenced it. Patel, confirmed by the Senate as FBI director in February 2025, was testifying in the Hart Senate Office Building on Capitol Hill. Schiff, the Democratic senator from California elected in 2024, pressed for the names and reasons behind the move.
Maxwell had been transferred from a low-security facility in Tallahassee, Florida, to a minimum-security prison camp in Bryan, Texas. U.S. Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche had met with her in Florida before the transfer. The timing drew the scrutiny because it followed the administration’s announcement that it would not unseal investigation materials concerning Epstein. Bureau of Prisons policy requires that those charged with sex offenses be held in at least a low-security facility. Maxwell is serving a 20-year sentence after conviction on charges that include sex trafficking of a minor.
Patel told the committee he was not tracking the everyday movements of inmates. He framed his work instead as protecting the country, delivering reform, and pushing back against what he called the weaponization of intelligence. The exchange escalated when he turned the accusation outward. “No, I think the American people believe the truth. That I’m not in the weeds on the everyday movements of inmates. What I am doing is protecting this country, providing historic reform, and combating the weaponization of intelligence by the likes of you and we have callously proven you to be a liar in Russiagate, in January 6. You are the biggest fraud to ever the United States Senate. You are a disgrace to this institution and an utter coward.”
Schiff answered with two words. “I’m not surprised.”
Patel repeated the phrase and kept going. “I’m not surprised. You continue to lie from your perch and put on a show so you can go raise money for your charade. You are a political buffoon at best.”
