DuSable Lake Shore Drive bridge stuck in heat, previously flagged as deficient
During a historic Chicago heat wave, the DuSable Lake Shore Drive bridge temporarily remained raised after a scheduled lift, disrupting downtown traffic. Crews and a Fire Department water-spray operation cooled the steel, allowing the bridge to close and the roadway to reopen in mid-afternoon, with detours in place. Officials cited heat-related expansion of metal components, and noted the bridge’s aging, previously deficient status. The incident followed a pattern of heat-related issues across Chicago’s movable bridges, including nearby Calumet River crossings. City officials said there were no injuries and called for ongoing scrutiny of maintenance and tolerances. Inspections in 2024 had flagged the DLSD bridge as structurally deficient and functionally obsolete, highlighting long-standing concerns about aging urban infrastructure.
