Nor’easter Kills Worker, Floods East Coast, Disrupts Travel
A powerful late-September nor’easter battered the East Coast from North Carolina to New England, bringing destructive winds, heavy rain, storm surge and widespread flooding that inundated streets, roads and homes. A New York City Housing Authority worker was killed by a falling tree in Brooklyn, and fallen trees and power lines left roughly 138,000 to 140,000 customers without power after about 150,000 initially lost service. New York declared emergencies in several counties; New York and New Jersey had also declared states of emergency as the storm unfolded. The storm caused more than 3,000 flight delays and nearly 430 cancellations, and two Ed Sheeran concerts at Gillette Stadium were canceled. Although the strongest winds were easing, additional rain and localized river, street and coastal flooding remained possible into Monday and Tuesday, including in eastern Massachusetts.
